Changing the Line

Here is a recently sold painting of Roses. The top one is of the finished piece and the bottom one is a photo I took prior to my final change. After consideration of the lower image, I decided that the mass of roses needed more width and change of line. I added another flower to the left and I added a sprig of fern to the right. I changed line, as we say in art. Another change was to the central rose. I shortened the top of it so that there was greater height difference across the mass. I changed the line. Art is about line, mass, movement of vision. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably do something else different. That's art.
