Veduta vs. Veduta Ideata

From centuries ago in Italy we had artists painting the world around them. They painted the landscape, villages, buildings and people. If what they painted was a real place and they painted the details of that place it was called a "veduta"(accent over a) which means "view" in Italian. Now if the artist imagined the scene and painted from their imagination it was called a "veduta ideata". It was also known as a caprice or capriccio. They may have incorporated parts of reality but added fanciful parts to the painting.

Artists still work out the real and the imaginary. The top painting is my "veduta" and the bottom is my "veduta ideata". Isn't art fun!

  1. I love the way you lead the eye into imagination in your "veduta ideata".
